About

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…and then a bunch of crap happened. Then God create basements and soon after, blogging. Then God finally created “A Blog In My Basement.” And God saw that it was good.

Today, with the launching of this web site, we begin a new era in…who am I kidding. I’m just some jackass spouting my opinion. I’ve been doing it for years now, but like my ‘sex offender’ status, we simple won’t talk about it.

With ‘A Blog In My Basement’ I’m going solo, leaving the nest, re-popping my cherry. Topics of discussion will focus on politics, sports, pop culture and many, many wonderful subjects. Nothing will be off-limits, except my medical records. Those will remain secret. My ‘roids are my business only.

One thing you will see absent from this site is a comments section. I hate them with a passion. It would be comical what some people write, if it wasn’t so damn sad. If you want to spout an opinion, get a blog. However, I will post my email and if someone has something solid to say, I will post it, especially if you’re disagreeing with me.

Having said that, I feel I am obliged to tell you up front about who I am. My name is Rob, I’m in my thirties, I’m married and I live in New York. I work in television and no, I’m not someone famous. I’m not anyone important, and no, I cannot introduce you to Judge Judy.

First, my sports…I enjoy all sports, but my passion is football, both college and pro, and college basketball. My teams are (and yes, I will be bias) are the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Hurricanes and the Duke Blue Devils. Huh?

I know what you’re thinking, how? I was born in Miami and lived there for my first nine years. My father left when I was young, so I have no clue how I started to like pro football and how I became a Dallas fan. As long as I can remember, I’ve been a Cowboys fan (proof often coming in old photos of me as a kid wearing Cowboy gear. When people ask, I tell them my best guess…my favorite color as a kid was blue. The Cowboys were probably the first team I saw and that’s that.

Next I was introduced to the Canes. The man who would eventually become my step-father attended the University of Miami and in an effort to win over my approval, he took me to Hurricane games. Back then though, they weren’t very good and getting a seat at the fifty against the Seminoles was not a problem.

At that time, I had no interest in basketball. In fact, I had never even seen a game played. There were no NBA teams in Florida yet and UM has suspended their basketball program. When I was nine, my new step-father went to get his dissertation at Duke University, so we moved up to Durham.

Here I saw for the first time I saw the game of basketball. Ironically, at that time, Coach K’s second year, the Blue Devils kind of sucked. At the time the Tar Heels and the Wolfpack were the team’s always on TV. However, it was Duke basketball that we watched and when we left Durham two years later, my love for the team went with me.

We moved to Sarasota, Florida and by then, my teams were engrained in me. Now over twenty years later, I’ve enjoyed 11 championships between the three (UM 5, Duke 3, Dallas 3). Hell, you can probably include two more, since I was a Blue Jay’s fan for a while until the state of Florida finally got a couple teams.

As for pro basketball, I’ve never got into it like I did college, but if one asked me, I would say I follow the Miami Heat.

With so many championships from my team, I’ve gotten spoiled to the point where I probably don’t enjoy it as much as I should. I often watch games angry, expecting great plays and cursing bad ones. I tend to remember the loses more than the wins, so my wife tends to avoid me when my teams lose.

Next is Pop Culture. I love movies, I love the web, but TV is alright at best. I watch Lost, Big Brother and old Simpson’s episodes (but despise the new ones). I think South Park is the smartest show on TV and I get my news from the Daily Show and MSNBC’s Countdown. As for music, while I enjoy some new music, I’ve been stuck in a 1992 loop for a long time now.

Finally, politics. I’m a proud liberal, who is unashamed to use the word liberal. I do consider myself open-minded and I believe there are good conservative ideas out there, but I just can’t remember the last time I saw one. I’ve always voted for the Democrat, except for NYC Mayor, where I voted for Bloomberg. I’ll be voting for Obama this fall and as mush as I would like to say one day I would vote for a moderate Republican, it would be lie. Because the President picks the federal judges and the Supreme Court, I will never vote for a Republican for President.

Over the next couple months, as we get this blog going, we’ll be talking a lot of politics, so a lot more will come out.

That’s all for now.
